Easy DIY yarn wreath for Valentine's Day

Decorating for Valentine’s Day for me means just a few subtle touches around the house. Definitely hearts, but I also love the XOXO sentiment. I found this ribbon at Hobby Lobby that has XOXO on it and decided to put it as a banner across a yarn wreath. I love the neutral colors, and you can never go wrong with black and white. It technically is subtle enough to have up all year!

Step One: Wrapping the Wreath Form with Yarn

With any yarn wreath you start the same, by tying a knot. Sometimes you may find it easier to take the skein of yarn and ball it up first so that it is easier to maneuver around the wreath form, but this one was fine as is.

First you tie a knot when making the yarn wreath.

Due to the nature of this yarn, be careful not to pull too tight or it will separate from itself and pull apart. You have to pull it pretty hard to do this, but I still thought I’d add the warning.

Once you are done wrapping, normally you would just untie the original knot and tie both ends together into a new final knot. This yarn is so thick however, that the knot ends up being what would be too large to cover with the ribbon banner later. So this is where the floral pins come in.

Use floral pins to tie up the ends of the yarn wreath.

After untying the knot, crisscross the two ends and press the floral pin down over them. You may feel like you need more than one. The floral pin holds it all down nice and tight! Just trim off the excess yarn, and it’s all set.

Step Two: Adding the XOXO Ribbon Banner

You need to place the ribbon over the top of the wreath with enough on both sides left to knot, and try to pick the perfect placement for the “xoxo” to look right in the middle. Then you just tie knots, carefully covering the floral pin area.

Next you want to trim off the excess ribbon leaving as much as you’d like, whatever looks good to you. Then you will want to cut the ends like this:

That’s it! If you’d like, you can loop a string onto the wreath and knot it to use for hanging, or just hang it as is. So easy, and such a cute and simple wreath for Valentine’s Day.
